Three alleged robbers were killed by the Benue State Police Command in a gunfight at Afia in the state's Ukum Local Government Area.

The State Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, said in a statement released late Sunday that the officers from Ukum who responded to a distress call engaged the alleged robbers in a gun battle.

According to Anene, on October 14, 2022, at around 02:30 a.m., the Ukum Local Government Area received a distress call from Afia reporting that armed bandits were robbing people in the neighborhood.

"Shortly after, a patrol squad was sent to the area. The bandits started a gunfight with the cops as soon as they arrived on the site.

"Three suspects were shot and taken to a local hospital where their deaths were verified, while other suspects managed to flee with wounds.

The PPRO identified a locally made pistol with five rounds of live ammo, a machete, and a few trinkets that possibly were charmes among the goods confiscated from the suspects.

The PPRO reported that while operations to capture further gang members were ongoing, the state's commissioner of police, Wale Abass, praised community people for their assistance and promised them a prompt response to distress calls.
